“Ailah’s finger, she’s actually here!” a familiar voice squeals, and I jolt awake, sitting up and blinking to remove the sleep from my eyes, my heart pounding against my ribcage.

Ambrosia doesn’t give me a single second to process her presence before she throws her arms around me with another squeal right in my ear. I wince but immediately hug her back.

“You two scared me!” comes Margaret’s voice in the direction of the kitchen.

“Sorry, we should have knocked.” Jon this time, his tone sheepish.

“Oh, Jon, when have you ever knocked?” Margaret asks.

Is everyone up? How late is it?

Ames pulls back to look me over, her dark eyes shining. “I can’t believe you’re finally back!” She’s nearly gushing, which is very unlike her, and that tells me how much she missed me.

I smile at her, her dark hair tied back in space buns, the multi-colored, too-long scarf wound multiple times around her neck — no doubt a present from one of her many siblings — and her swollen belly. “Ailah, I’ve missed you.”

Ames snorts, and I pull my knees to my chest so she can sit down beside me. “Of course you have. But don’t worry — there will be plenty of time to catch up while you help clean my house.”

I scrub my eyes to get rid of the excess sleep and then stare at her. “You? You want your house clean?”

“It’s called nesting and it’s very annoying,” Jon says, coming into the living room. He grins at me and gives me a fist bump. “Nice to see you, kid.”

Grayson follows him, holding a tray full of steaming mugs. He gives me a small smile but otherwise avoids my gaze as he places the tray on the coffee table in front of us, then sits on the floor next to my section of the couch.

“You sleep okay after all your traveling?” Ames asks, and it’s something Grayson would normally ask me — if I slept well — but he’s still not looking at me.

“I did…” Something flickers in the back of my mind — something I’m supposed to remember from last night, from mine and Gray’s conversation. Why are his brown eyes so pained? Why won’t he look at me?

I frown at him, but he just waves a hand at the tray of mugs. “Help yourselves. Coffee for me and Jon, tea for you two.”

Ames leans forward to take a mug and then groans as she sinks back against the couch cushions. “I hope this tastes better than the last cup of tea you made me.”

“It was a good cup of tea!” Grayson protests, still not meeting my gaze.

I want to know what’s up with him, but I don’t push the issue, forcing my attention to the conversation at hand. Still, I feel like I’ve accidentally messed something up. “What did he do last time?”

“Steeped it for too long.” Ames rolls her eyes and blows on the liquid in her mug. “Honestly, how hard is it to steep tea the right
